A memorable charactor
It was in the early days of my working life that I met this peculiar lady. She was at that time doing small business selling shoes in Sibu town. But before that she had been an active student movement agitator so to say. I recalled meeting her in a small village down river when she was going around the village to tell villagers to go against the new regulations of the education policy of the British Colonial administration with the sinister aim of eliminating Chinese education which they consider as subversive. We did not know each other then and I nearly forgot all about her. It seemed she was later arrested by special branch and put into custody in Kuching. Somehow or other, she was later released and then she began having a special relationship with a married special branch officer who was married to her cousin sister. There was a short time of struggle and conflict with her cousin fighting for the same man but later she gave up bringing up the only daughter all by herself. Some time later, I met her again in Miri where she began a small time facial and beauty treatment centre. She did make some money during her short stay in Miri. The last I heard of her was in Sibu when she came back there to talk of business deals in hair saloon business. By then she had migrated to Australia and her daughter had also entered university there. In a way she was quite capable in view of her scanty resources and she made it all alone. I wish her every success in her undertaking.
